I am tired of pretending Meghan Markle's public downfall is some grand unsolved mystery. It is not. It is not a locked-room thriller. It is not Gone Girl with better tailoring. It is a woman being handed ladder after ladder after ladder, then somehow looking directly at the snake and saying, "Actually, that one."

And yes, before anyone starts clutching their ethically sourced pearls, the British press was awful to her. Obviously. They were vile. They behaved like a Victorian disease with a comments section. But the press being awful does not magically erase Meghan's own choices. That is where the conversation always gets stupid.

Two things can be true at once. Meghan was treated unfairly. Meghan also made choices that made people stop rooting for her. These are not mutually exclusive concepts. Adults should be able to hold both in their heads without requiring a fainting couch.

The public gave Meghan a ladder before it gave her room to be human. That was the first trap.

Before Meghan became a duchess, a symbol, a problem, a brand, and a national group project, she had a lifestyle blog.

The Tig matters because it proves Meghan did not discover lifestyle branding in Montecito while wandering past a bowl of lemons. She had already built that version of herself years earlier. It felt like the public version of Meghan that required the least translation. Then royal life entered the picture and she shut it down. At the time, this looked like sacrifice. It also created the first strange absence in her public story.

This is why the later As Ever pivot should have made sense — it was a return to her original language. The problem was that by the time she returned to lifestyle content, the audience was no longer meeting a charming actress with a blog. They were meeting a global royal exile carrying years of unresolved drama in a basket with artisanal jam.

The 2018 royal wedding should have locked Meghan Markle permanently into public goodwill. Honestly, she had the easiest win imaginable. The world wanted to love her. Not casually. Aggressively. Then Thomas Markle happened.

Meghan completely misunderstood the emotional optics. The public does not need families to be perfect. What people do not trust is emotional coldness disguised as moral superiority. She kept approaching the Thomas Markle situation like it could be professionally managed into disappearance. But fathers do not disappear just because your publicist wishes really hard. And once that contradiction lodged itself in public consciousness, everything else started getting interpreted through it.

Leaving royal life should have been the next giant ladder. It sounded clean, which is usually how you know life is about to start acting disgusting. As explored in Six Years Out, the exit created a new problem. Royalty rewards mystique. American celebrity rewards output. Those are not the same game.

OPRAH WAS THE GREAT RESET. AND MEGHAN KNEW IT.

For one night, the board went back in her favour.

The Oprah interview gave Meghan something her family drama had taken away: a clean villain. The monarchy was easier to blame than Thomas Markle. Easier to understand. Easier to rage against. For a while, Meghan got the emotional clarity back. Then the ladder created the next snake. Once a public figure learns explanation can reset the board, the temptation to keep explaining becomes overwhelming. This is how truth turns into content without anyone admitting it happened.

The Oprah ladder worked so well that every future ladder started looking like another attempt to climb it.

There is a point where the public stops listening and starts imitating your voice.

The South Park "Worldwide Privacy Tour" episode landed because the public already understood the joke before it finished. The parody worked because it compressed years of frustration into one blunt premise: a couple demanding privacy while remaining publicly available. The joke was not really about privacy. It was about exhaustion. Exhaustion does not need evidence in the same way outrage does. It just sighs and changes the channel. And once you become satire-ready, every new project has to fight the joke before it can be judged on its own terms.

2025

AS EVER WAS NOT THE PROBLEM. MEGHAN WAS.

The brand was pretty. The timing was not. The trust was gone.

The jam is not the issue. The labels are not the issue. The issue is that Meghan tried to sell warmth after years of seeming cold to the people who made her inconvenient. That is the father story again. That is always the father story. You cannot ask the public to buy a domestic fantasy while the unresolved father wound is still sitting in the corner.

With Love, Meghan fell to 1,217th in Netflix's rankings. Not a typo. Netflix exited As Ever in March 2026. The finances tell the rest of the story. The show should have been a ladder. Meghan could have shown what the public had been waiting to see for years: a real person. Harry burning something. A recipe failing. A FaceTime with her father that makes everyone uncomfortable but at least feels human. That show would have been watched.

Meghan kept trying to control the story. The story kept leaking out through the people she refused to bring into the room.

The saddest part is that Meghan probably could have had almost everything she said she wanted if she had chosen warmth earlier. Not perfection. Warmth. Let the father be embarrassing. Let the family be messy. Let the show be weird. She did not need to be flawless. She needed to be believable. And somehow, after all those ladders, that became the one square she kept missing.

The Questions People Are Actually Asking
Thomas Markle staged paparazzi photos before the 2018 royal wedding and gave multiple tabloid interviews. Meghan chose not to publicly reconcile with him — a strategic choice that left the wound open. The public has interpreted Meghan's brand of compassion against the backdrop of a father still giving wounded interviews from outside the frame. Her mistake was not having a messy family. It was acting like the mess could be deleted.
Yes. That can be true while also acknowledging that some of Meghan's later choices made her public image worse. The British press was brutal. Meghan also became increasingly curated, distant, and brand-managed. Both things can sit in the same ugly room. Two things can be true at once. Adults should be able to hold both without requiring a fainting couch.
Trying to control the story instead of humanising it. The public can forgive mess. It struggles to forgive emotional management dressed up as authenticity. The Thomas Markle situation was the first and most persistent example of this pattern. She needed to be believable. Somehow, after all those ladders, that became the one square she kept missing.
Because Meghan's public image repeatedly moves between huge opportunities and self-inflicted setbacks. The wedding, Oprah, Netflix, and Montecito were ladders. The father fallout, family estrangement, over-curation, public fatigue, and branding backlash were snakes. The pattern is so consistent it practically draws its own board.
