Setting the Scene
THE 2026 MET GALA: EVERYONE WAS THERE.
The 2026 Met Gala happened on May 4th at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The theme was Superfine: Tailoring Black Style — a celebration of Black sartorial excellence, precision, and legacy. The co-chairs were Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour. The red carpet was extraordinary. The guest list was extraordinary. The whole evening was, by every account, exactly what fashion's biggest night is supposed to be.

Anna Wintour is a Dame Commander of the British Empire. She is a personal friend of King Charles. She is, by every account, aligned with the institution that Meghan and Harry exited loudly and with documentation. "Anna loves the Royal Family. She is a Dame. Anna would have hated how they handled their exit from The Firm." She hated it. The invitation has not followed.

The Paris Drinks That Meant Nothing
In 2025, Meghan and Wintour crossed paths at a Balenciaga event in Paris. Sources close to Meghan report she believed it went "totally positive" — that Wintour complimented her outfit and suggested drinks. Meghan took this as a thaw. Wintour apparently took it as a polite evening. The 2026 Met Gala invitation did not arrive. The drinks have not happened.

"People are just kind of over her. She sucks the air out of every room and makes it about herself. Anna does not want that." Here is the detail that elevates this particular snub above all others: Beyoncé was co-chairing. Venus Williams was co-chairing. Two women Meghan has spent years carefully positioning herself adjacent to were sitting in the co-chair seats — and the invitation still did not come.
The pattern of strategic proximity has been documented at some length. Sources have described Meghan's "noticeable pattern of showing up at events tied to Beyoncé's world" as looking like "a conscious and a bit of a desperate effort to position herself closer to that circle." Beyoncé, per sources, has noticed this. "Beyoncé values relationships that evolve quietly over time, so any sign of pressure or strategic networking can make her more cautious." WHAT WOULD SHE HAVE WORN — IF SHE'D BEEN INVITED.
The theme was Costume Art — a celebration of Black sartorial excellence, history, and precision tailoring. It required cultural awareness, genuine engagement with the subject, and a commitment to the room rather than to oneself. We have reviewed Meghan's documented relationship with themes, dress codes, and rooms she walks into. We have also reviewed the chartreuse at Carey Mulligan's Netflix party, the olive green at Prince Louis' christening, and the general body of evidence. We present our findings.
Scenario A — The Safe Play
Something Extremely Beige
A floor-length column gown in ecru, champagne, or what her team would call "ivory." Minimal. Described in the press notes as "understated elegance." Not technically wrong. Completely missing a theme that was a celebration of bold, expressive, precision-tailored Black style. She would arrive looking like a tasteful wall.
An enormous structured gown — possibly with a cape — in a statement colour she's already worn to someone else's event this year. The proportions would be dramatic. Her team would call it an "interpretation" of the theme. The rest of the room would call it a stylist who received the brief at 11pm and panicked.

Scenario C — The Brand Tie-In
Something That Mentions As Ever
A custom piece that somehow references the jam brand. The colour of the As Ever packaging. A floral motif from the lifestyle range. Paired with a comment in the press notes about how fashion and food and community are all connected for her. The As Ever brand is currently generating headlines for smashed chocolates. A Met Gala look as a press release. Again.
Verdict: The most predictable option. Probably the actual one.
Scenario D — The Wildcard
Whatever Colour Someone Else Had Already Claimed
Given documented form, there is a non-zero probability that Meghan would have arrived in the colour or silhouette associated with another attendee — the co-chair's signature aesthetic, a designer's statement moment, someone else's clearly established visual territory. It has happened before. Not on purpose. Never on purpose.
Verdict: History suggests this is more likely than it sounds.
